Deficiência de Vitamina C: Casos Clínicos (Scurvy: Case Report)

– Indivíduos que vivem sozinhos e têm histórico de abuso de substâncias, dieta restritiva ou doença mental têm muito mais probabilidade de desenvolver escorbuto. Nos Estados Unidos e em outros países desenvolvidos, é frequentemente assumido que a incidência de deficiência de vitamina C ou escorbuto é insignificante devido ao amplo acesso a alimentos fortificados e vitaminas. As manifestações iniciais comuns de escorbuto incluem anemia, dor óssea, fácil hematoma, petéquias, doença gengival, hemorragias perifoliculares nas extremidades inferiores e alterações do humor. Uma manifestação rara é a hipertensão pulmonar. O escorbuto está associado a má dentição e diáteses hemorrágicas.
