¨Atualmente, define-se demência como uma condição clínica na qual ocorre decréscimo cognitivo comporado a um nível prévio do indivíduo, com comprometimento de suas funções sociais e funcionais. A demência é um processo de degeneração de células cerebrais que afeta a capacidade cognitiva. A pode influenciar, comprometer e impedir a realização das Atividades de Vida Diária (AVD), consideradas essenciais na manutenção da capacidade funcional e da qualidade de vida. As AVD compreendem as Atividades Básicas de Vida Diária (ABVD), Atividades Instrumentais de Vida Diária (AIVD) e Atividades Avançadas de Vida Diária (AAVD). Independente do tipo (por Alzheimer, vascular ou frontotemporal, por exemplo) o curso clínico quase sempre é progressivo e incurável, sendo o estágio avançado muito semelhante: uma pessoa restrita ao leito, com pouca ou nenhuma comunicação verbal, sem reconhecer os familiares mais próximos, incontinente, com dificuldades na alimentação e que necessita de auxílio para autocuidado. Biomarcadores e novas técnicas de diagnóstico evoluíram proporcionando maior acurácia na avaliação do portador de demência.¨
