¨Em 2011, 365 milhões de pessoas em todo o mundo tinham diagnóstico de diabetes. Aumento da atividade física e melhoria da nutrição são estratégias práticas para reduzir o risco de diabetes, e mesmo aqueles indivíduos já diagnosticados com diabetes tipo 2 (DM2) podem se beneficiar de um programa de modificação do estilo de vida. Indivíduos com diabetes podem obter os mesmos benefícios da atividade física do que aqueles sem diabetes, incluindo aumento de energia, normalização da glicemia e redução dos fatores de risco para doenças crônicas. Os exercícios físicos apresentam efeitos hipoglicemiantes sndo importantes coadjuvantes no tratamento do diabetes tipo 1 e 2. Para que se obtenha os benefícios dos exercícios físicos é relevante que os mesmos sejam estruturados de forma individualizada, considerando a alimentação, a administração de insulina exógena conforme a duração e a intensidade da atividade física. Pessoas com diabetes e aquelas que supervisionam pacientes com diabetes devem estar cientes das recomendações e contraindicações do exercício.¨
