Narcolepsia: FTTKA (Narcolepsy: Five Things to Thing About): FTTKA

– A narcolepsia é um distúrbio crônico caracterizado por sonolência diurna excessiva. A causa é uma deficiência do neuropeptídeo orexina (hipocretina), que regula a vigília. A narcolepsia afeta negativamente todos os aspectos da vida dos pacientes. A prevalência global é de 25–50 por 100 000 pessoas, com início típico durante a adolescência, embora um segundo pico possa ocorrer aos 30–39 anos.

A cataplexia pode ocorrer em pessoas com narcolepsia e é frequentemente mal diagnosticada

Pessoas com suspeita de narcolepsia devem ser encaminhadas a um médico especialista em medicina do sono

O teste múltiplo de latência do sono (MSLT) é o teste diagnóstico de primeira linha

O tratamento é vitalício e requer ajustes com flutuações na gravidade da doença. O tratamento inclui otimizar o cochilo e a higiene do sono; educação do paciente e da família; e medicamentos que promovem a vigília, consolidam o sono e suprimem a cataplexia. Com o tratamento, muitas pessoas com narcolepsia podem recuperar funções quase normais; elas podem ser elegíveis para dirigir uma vez os sintomas foram controlados por 12 meses.
