¨A síndrome de Lutembacher caracteriza-se pela associação de comunicação interatrial (CIA) e estenose mitral. A prevalência dessa síndrome é incerta. Trata-se de uma afecção mais comum no sexo feminino, em parte pela maior incidência tanto de estenose mitral como de CIA nesse gênero. A repercussão hemodinâmica resultante dessa associação depende do tamanho da comunicação e da gravidade da estenose valvar, que podem levar a graus variados de hipertensão pulmonar, dilatação das câmaras direitas e insuficiência valvar tricúspide. Essa condição, atualmente, pode ser tratada por meio de intervenção percutânea (valvotomia mitral por balão e oclusão do defeito por prótese) ou tratamento cirúrgico padrão.¨
