– A gota é uma doença reconhecida há séculos e hoje é entendida como a forma de artrite mais freqüente em homens, acometendo 1 a 2% deles em países ocidentais.
– Classicamente, se apresenta em crises de mono ou oligoartrite, mas em alguns casos pode progredir para uma forma crônica de poliartrite com deformidade óssea.
– Além do envolvimento articular, podem existir nefrolitíase e disfunção renal.
– Dados epidemiológicos também sugerem sua associação com outros distúrbios metabólicos, como dislipidemia, alterações do metabolismo glicêmico, síndrome metabólica propriamente dita e, em última análise, com hipertensão arterial (HA) e doença cardiovascular, o que caracteriza a gravidade potencial dessa doença.
