¨O tremor essencial (TE) é o mais comum entre os transtornos do movimento. Ele é muito mais comum do que a doença de Parkinson. Tem sido descrito como postural, cinético e até como um tremor esporádico em repouso. Geralmente é bilateral, está presente com diferentes tarefas e interfere nas atividades da vida diária. Embora o tremor essencial possa se manifestar no início da vida adulta, a maioria dos pacientes não apresenta tratamento até 60 anos. Após 69 anos de idade tende a progredir lentamente. Uma história de tremor aparentemente autossômica dominante é com frequência observada no TE. O tremor envolvendo a cabeça é mais típico de TE. Em geral, o TE é um achado isolado de tremor, enquanto a doença de Parkinson está associada a uma postura inclinada, marcha arrastada e perda de memória. Diferente da doença de Parkinson, o TE não leva a complicações graves. O tremor essencial frequentemente melhora com doses baixas de álcool. A base do tratamento do tremor essencial são os betabloqueadores ou a primidona. Casos grave de TE podem necessitar cirurgia, como a colocação de um estimulador cerebral profundo.¨
