A sídrome metabólica (SM) é um distúrbio multifatorial representado por um conjunto de fatores de risco cardiovascular usualmente relacionados à deposição central de gordura e à resistência à insulina. Para diagnóstico da SM, o indivíduo deve apresentar a combinação de pelo menos três dos cinco componentes: circunferência abdominal elevada, hipertrigliceridemia, redução do HDL colesterol, hipertensão arterial sistêmica e hiperglicemia. A associação da SM com a doença cardiovascular eleva a mortalidade geral em aproximadamente 1,5 vezes e a cardiovascular em 2,5 vezes. A associação entre adiposidade abdominal e aterosclerose subclínica foi documentada em diferentes populações. O diagnóstico de síndrome metabólica requer a presença de três ou mais dos critérios abaixo mencionados:

– Obesidade abdominal: (circunferência abdominal > 94 cm – homens; e > 80 cm – mulheres)

-Triglicérides: > 150 mg/dL

– HDL-colesterol: < 40 mg/dL (homens) e < 50 mg/dL (mulheres)

– Pressão arterial sistólica: 130 mmHg ou tratamento para hipertensão arterial

– Pressão arterial diastólica: > 85 mmHg ou tratamento para hipertensão arterial

– glicemia de jejum: 100 mg/dL
