¨A síndrome de Grisel é uma subluxação não traumática da articulação atlanto-axial com inflamação nos tecidos moles adjacentes. De acordo com a hipótese de duas ocorrências, amplamente aceita para a patogênese da síndrome de Grisel, a frouxidão ligamentar preexistente da articulação atlantoaxial é considerada como a primeira hipótese. Um processo inflamatório ou infeccioso da articulação atlanto-axial atua como a segunda hipótese, resultando em subluxação atlanto-axial não traumática. Essa síndrome não é desencadeada por trauma e os pacientes têm história de infecções de cabeça, pescoço ou otorrinolaringologia. Um diagnóstico de síndrome de Grisel deve ser considerado em pacientes com torcicolo agudo após infecção ou cirurgia de cabeça e pescoço, mesmo na ausência de condições subjacentes associadas à frouxidão da articulação atlanto-axial. Frequentemente afeta crianças e adolescentes e 90% dos pacientes têm menos de 21 anos de idade. ¨
