Chest imaging in patients with suspected COVID-19

– Chest imaging is not routinely recommended to diagnose coronarivurs 2019 (COVID-19)  in patients with mild features

– In patientes with risk factors for disease progression chest radiography, together with clinical, symptoms, may inform whether to follow up in the communit or to refer to secondary care

– A normal chest radiography or CT sean does not rule out COVID-19

– Chest CT should be considered for some patients

– Repeat imaging is not indicated unless there is a change in clinical ed for some patients status, such as increased respiratory distress, or complications are suspected

Diagnostic testing for SARS-CoV-2

– Test sensitivity depends on timing of sample colletion

– Test sensitivity varies according to specimen type and disease severity

– Test positivity does not alwals entail infectivity

– Point-of-care testing provides rapide diagnosis but is limited by ¨low throughput¨

– Positively serology does not equate with lifelong immunity

CMAJ 2020, vol 192 (22): E6013

– Prepare outside the patients´s room: assign team roles, check equipment and review the airway strategy

– Don personal protective equipment (PPE) and cross-check team members

– Videolaryngoscopy may have benefits over direct laryngoscopy

– During  intubation: anticipate rapid oxygen desaturation and associated emergencies

– Removing PPE carries a high-risk of self-contamination
